"Today we met here not to celebrate a very important historical occasion in the life of our nation. We are gathered together to fortify our faith, in order to experience once again this event which happened 1020 years ago . Because what happened then has its consequences for us today." So His Beatitude Lubomyr said in a sermon (part of which can be heard in the Ukrainian language at: http://www.ugcc.org.ua/audio/xreshennya.mp3 ) during a pontifical Divine Liturgy which was celebrated in Kyiv on July 27 on the occasion of the celebration of the 1020th anniversary of the Baptism of Kyivan Rus’. A solemn service in which took part bishops of the UGCC, numerous priests, and more than 3000 laity from all corners of Ukraine took place on the construction site of the future Patriarchal Center of the UGCC.

"We accepted a testimony, we accepted a tradition, but we are also living it out, nurturing our faith in daily life. Therefore, so important is today's divine Liturgy which is taking place also in all parishes of the UGCC all over Ukraine, in every community. And here, and there, we will renew those vows which we proclaimed on the day we received the Sacrament of Baptism." So consequently the Head of the UGCC said in his sermon. And he noted then: "We want today to ask ourselves: How indeed do we live by this spiritual acquisition of our ancestors?"

After the Liturgy, in a procession in which took part representatives of every group of the faithful of the UGCC, bishops, priests, monks, nuns, and laity, participants of the celebration went to the Dnipro to draw water for blessing. Water was drawn in prepared vessels and brought to the place where the service was conducted. After this the order of renewing baptismal vows was conducted. The purpose of this, as we read about in last year’s “Address on the occasion of the Feast of the Great Equal to the Apostles Prince Volodymyr,” was: "Consciously and responsibly to renew the decisions with all their consequences and to try to make them the basis of our daily life again." Indeed, it was touching to be participants of a large community of believers who said with one mouth: "I reject Satan and all his works, and all his angels, and all his service, and all his pride," and then: "I join with Christ." (an excerpt from this service can be heard at: http://www.ugcc.org.ua/audio/xreshennya2.mp3 )

At the completion of the celebration the bishops sprinkled all the participants with blessed water from the Dnipro. Then a concert program with the participation of the Dudaryk Choir from Lviv, which also adorned the Divine Liturgy with its song, and the child-youth ensemble Korali from Vyshhorod took place.
The practice of renewing baptismal vows in Kyiv was started in 2007 as part of the Forum of Christian Youth, which took place on August 18-19 in Kyiv.
