This was the conclusion of Bishop Hlib (Lonchyna), Apostolic Visitator for Ukrainian Greek-Catholics in Italy, Spain and Ireland, after his stay during Passion Week and Easter in Spain. "The lack of catechetical programs is sharply felt for the faithful, and not only children and youth,” Bishop Hlib told the Information Department.

On May 2, 2008, at 13.00 in the Vatican it was reported that His Holiness Benedict XVI has blessed the decision of the Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church about the appointment of priest-monk Bryan Joseph Bayda, CSSR, pastor of the Church of the Mother of God of Perpetual Help in Yorkton (Canada), as Eparch of Saskatoon.

53. In memory of victims of the Holocaust

May 1, 2008, is the day in memory of victims of the Holocaust. Six million Jews, children, women, and men, perished only because they were Jewish. “The twentieth century, in addition to everything else, left after itself cases of mass extermination of one nation by another. They were done on the European continent and they were done on other lands.

54. The status of stauropegion will be given to the Lavra of the Holy Dormition in Univ

On May 3-4, 2008, at the Lavra [Major Monastery] of the Holy Dormition in Univ on the occasion of the 110th anniversary of the renewal of Studite monastic life, solemn celebrations will take place. In addition to this jubilee, on these days Blessed Archimandrite Klymentiy (Sheptytsky) will be honored. An important event will be the granting of stauropegion status to the Lavra of the Holy Dormition in Univ.

On April 2, 2008, His Beatitude Lubomyr, Major Archbishop of Kyiv and Halych, signed a decree which, on the basis of the decision of the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC which last year was held in Philadelphia, proclaimed the convocation of the Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church 2008. The synod will take place in Lviv from September 2 to 9. His Beatitude Lubomyr calls the faithful of the Church to pray for the preparation and conduct of the synod so that its work will be fruitful for the life of the UGCC.

“The primary purpose of this address is the desire to encourage people to pray. In what sense to pray? To pray not in the way that we suggest to God our solutions, as if we were the advisers of the Lord God. But to pray that His will be done. Thus, to hand Him our problems, and He knows best how to resolve them for us in the best way.”

The most holy days of the whole year are approaching: from Holy Thursday to the Sunday of the Resurrection - days in which we experience again the revelation of the final, incomprehensible divine love from this which seems like the greatest failure – the disgraceful death on the cross of the incarnate Son of God – to His stately triumph above all misfortune – His resurrection from the dead...

58. Head of the UGCC – Honored citizen of Lviv

The Head of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church, His Beatitude Lubomyr, has become an honored citizen of Lviv. On April 17 at a plenary meeting this decision was accepted by the Lviv City Council. “Lviv citizen of the year” is Andriy Kotel'nyk, who won a fight in the world boxing championship. The Yarema family received the status of “Noble Lviv family.”

On the official web page of the UGCC (in pdf format) we begin to publish numbers of the “Bulletin of the Kyiv and Halych Major Archbishopric.” The decision to begin publishing the official publication of the Kyiv and Halych Major Archbishopric was accepted during the Thirty-fifth session of the Synod of Bishops of the Kyiv and Halych Major Archbishopric, which took place on April 18-19, 2007.

60. The Head of the UGCC celebrates jubilees in New York

On April 12, 2008, in New York, majestic celebrations of the anniversaries of His Beatitude Lubomyr took place: his 75th birthday and the 50th anniversary of his priestly ordination. This celebration was different from others because of the gift for the jubilee. The organizers decided that all of the funds collected would be passed to His Beatitude Lubomyr as a gift of love which will be used for the completion of the construction of the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ in Kyiv.
